Question: Are there dangers in mixing household chlorinated bleach and sodium bicarbonate and injecting the mixed solution into your water system to raise the pH and get rid of any iron bacteria in the water filtering tank?

We typically try to limit the answers on this site to those of cleaning problems, but are some points to ponder.  Not really knowing the specifics of your water system, water source, water hardness and the bacteria/iron problem itself, it is hard to recommend any specific approach. I also do not know how this problem was diagnosed and by who.

Bleach is a nasty and dangerous chemical. It is considered to be corrosive and can harm people, animals and materials. The bottom line is, Scott, this type of job should be left to a professional. A water treatment specialist will have the proper safety equipment, monitoring equipment, products and experience to do this job correctly. If it is not done properly, someone could get hurt or damage to the water system and pipes could result. I would start with talking to a water supply company and have them take a look at the problem. The problem is clearly not a typical “do-it-yourself” type of deal and is too complex to advise you in this forum.
