Question: Why does my glassware always look hazy after putting through the dishwasher?

This haziness is most likely caused by the automatic dishwashing soap you are using. Most popular brands contain two culprits: sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) and sodium silicate. The sodium silicate is used to inhibit the bleach and alkalinity from attacking the dishware being washed in the dishwasher. These silicates leave a protective film behind on everything in the dishwasher. This film can build up on glassware to the point where you can see it as a haze. The heat during the wash and heated dry cycle bakes these silicates onto the glassware into a permanent haze. Chlorine from the bleach will attack plastic glasses causing them to haze as well.
